Welder Returns to Work 4x Faster After Weekend Softball Injury
Welder Returns to Work 4x Faster After Weekend Softball Injury
Ankle sprains are the most common musculoskeletal injury, resulting in millions of lost work days every year. Ankle sprains can take 6-8 week to heal enough to return the patient to normal function, resulting in lost wages, lost productivity, and decreased quality of life.
Just recently, a 40 year old welder suffered a grade 3 ankle sprain as he slid into second base while playing in a weekend softball tournament. A traditional treatment regiment would result in 5-8 week before returning to work, plus another 6-8 weeks of rehab. The treatment would look like the following:
7-10 days – Immediately joint immobilization with walking boot and crutches.
7-14 days – Transition to decreasing immobilization with walking boot and decrease use of crutches.
2-3 weeks – Weaning off the walking boot and full weight bearing in a shoe.
2-4 weeks after injury – Begin bearing weight with a walking boot for support.
2-3 weeks after injury – Start physical therapy for range of motion and muscle strengthening.
6-8 weeks after injury – Return to work in a lace up soft ankle brace worn under steel toed boots.
That is a lot of time and money lost for a softball tournament. 3-4 paycheck are gone from this worker’s income and 6-8 week of productivity are lost by his employer
Luckily for this weekend warrior, he went to a clinic that recently started prescribing the TayCo External Ankle Brace for grade 2 and 3 ankle sprains, and his journey back to normal life through functional recovery was much better for the patient, his family, and his employer. Here is how he recovered.
8 days – Joint immobilization with fixed TayCo External Ankle Brace and crutches.
9 days after injury – When the swelling and symptoms decreased, the TayCo External Ankle brace was converted to a Range Of Motion (ROM) brace by removing a few screws. The patient was able to walk with functional support provided by the brace.
2 weeks after injury – Return To Work in a TayCo external ankle brace worn over his steel toed boots with some limitations.
4 weeks after injury – Work without limitations using the TayCo external ankle brace worn over his steel toed boots.
8 weeks after the injury – Full Recovery. Return to normal functionality without the use of the TayCo External Ankle Brace.
With the TayCo external ankle brace, this welder was able to get back to work faster, start providing for his family sooner, and contributing to the success of his company after only 2 weeks, which could have taken up to 8 weeks with traditional prescription methods. Because the brace fits over the steel toed shoe or safety shoe he was able to get back to work sooner than ever before. In fact, functional recovery has been shown to speed up the recovery process because the surrounding muscles do not have a chance to atrophy as they do with restricted movement. The TayCo external ankle brace offers functional recovery with the necessary support to put you back In your normal activities.

This ankle brace is helping after surgery to repair broken ankle, after walking boot this brace much easier to deal with as my injured foot is same height in shoe as other foot
Thank you sharing your story, Lissa! We’re so glad the brace has been a helpful next step after your surgery. That even height between both feet can make such a big difference during recovery. We’re glad it’s working well for you!
This is a replacement purchase. I purchase the original brace and it broke after 3 football games. Hopefully this one will last longer.
Thanks for giving the brace another shot, and we’re sorry to hear the original didn’t hold up. That’s not the level of durability we aim for. Our support team will be reaching out to understand where the issue occured, refund the replacement, and make sure you’re taken care of!
This brace is great the only thing I wish the velcro would last longer other than that I love it
Thanks so much, Stacey! We’re glad to hear you’re loving the brace. We hear you on the Velcro; it’s something we’re always working to improve. If it ever starts to wear out sooner than expected, our support team is happy to help!
Haven't been able to use the brace yet, waiting for longer straps to go over the top of my shoe, but otherwise it looks like a good fit and will help me be able to walk farther than in my walking boot.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, Kevin! Keep us posted if you need anything else - we're always happy to help.
This brace is cheaply made. The quality of the product and materials used to make the brace are plastics that could easily bend and break. This brace is too expensive for the price. The brace is probably worth only 50% of the price (at most). Brace is not good for neurological conditions at all. This is an athletic brace for someone that can run and move about. I do not recommend for patients that have had strokes, spinal cord injuries, or anything of that nature because the brace isn’t sturdy enough or made to withstand the pressure that will be put on it. You will still need a customized AFO to use with it. Therefore, the is no use for the brace. I give this brace 2 stars because it’s not worth the price at all. If it was decently priced, then maybe I wouldn’t scored it higher, but I do not recommend.
Thank you for your feedback, Kristy. While our braces are built with durable, reinforced materials and work well for many individuals, we understand it may not be the right fit for every condition. We’d love the chance to learn more about your experience and see how we can help — our customer care team will be reaching out.
